Abstract

311,781. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Winne, H. A.). May 16, 1928, [Convention date]. Winding webs.-A motor 11 for winding rolled strip steel is automatically controlled to maintain constant tension in the strip delivered from finishing rollers 15. For ths purpose, the motor field winding 12 is in circuit with the contacts of a vibratory regulator 19, which has a coil 21 energized proportionally to the motor armature current, a second coil 22 energized proportionally to the speed of the finishing roller motor 18, and a third coil 32 energized proportionally to the current in the field 12. To provide for continued pull when the rollers are at rest, a relay 45 opening automatically as the speed of the motor 18 is reduced de-energizes electromagnetic contactors 41 which reinsert starting resistance 40 in the armature crcuit of the motor 11. Very slow running of the motor 11 when beginning to coil up a new strip is obtained by closing a field strengthening push-switch 50. Quick running under idle conditions is obtained by a switch 33 which cuts-out the regulator.
