Abstract
311,464. Spence, W. L. Feb. 16, 1928. Band or coil; compensating for wear; applied by speed regulators; electric and magnetic. - A centrifugally applied, electromagnetically released brake comprisee an annular electromagnet B mounted on a rotating shaft A and having attached to it by bolts D an armature consisting of two oppositely disposed turns C with free ends acting as a self-augmenting brake band, adapted to engage a fixed brake drum E and means for applying or releasing the brake by hand or foot independently of the electrical or speed conditions. The manual means comprise T-headed plungers G having skew racks engaging similar racks on an axial plunger H coupled by a thrust bearing to a manually operated screw J. The exciting coil B1 of the electromagnet B is supplied by slip rings B2. To ensure the preponderance of centrifugal force over magnetic attraction at a defined speed the magnet coil may be shunted, the magnetic flux shunted at the bridge piece by which the armature C is attached to the electromagnet may be regulated by brass shims, the free ends of the armature C may be weighted or lightened or prevented by brass spacers from full magnetic contact with the magnet poles. Adjustable springs F may press the armature out or pull it in.
