Abstract

311,326. Gewerkschaft M., Stinnes. May 9, 1928, [Convention date]. Condensing and washing processes. - Naphthalene is separated from coal gas by treatment above 30‹ C. with a solvent at ordinary or raised pressure and by subsequent condensation of the solvent vapours with the remaining naphthalene by cooling, the solvent comprising a mixture of oils boiling at low temperatures e.g., 160-220‹ C., and at higher temperatures e.g., above 250‹ C. The latter, e.g., quickly distilled benzene, washing oil, or anthracene oils are in excess. The lighter oil vapours (e.g., first runnings of naphthalene oils or the centrifuged residue oil from the low temperature distillation of light oil) entrained are condensed on cooling and returned to the solvent, preferably after separation from naphthalene by distillation from the mixture or by further cooling. The heavier oil is separated from naphthalene by cooling and re-used. The gas may be raised to above 30‹ C. by compression. The coal gas is subsequently cooled to about 5‹ C. by cold water to remove moisture and traces of oil vapours. Specifications 304,145, 305,545 and 333,297 are referred to.
