311,051. Cholerton, A. F., Tyler, H. C. S., and Lee, J. E. March 24, 1928. Capsules, applying. - In a machine for trimming the capsules or sealing covers of bottles &c., cutters 20 sever the capsule along helical cuts 58 and a circumferential cut 60. The cutters 20 are mounted on shafts 37 free to swing in arms 18 pivoted about pins 19 on the boss 7 of a shaft 6. The arms 18 are swung to engage the cutters with the capsule, by a spider 22 operating the arms through links 21. The spider is operated by a cam on a gear 9 engaging a rod 32 attached to a lever 27 operating the spider. The pivot 28 of the lever 27 is resiliently mounted. A rod 10 is oscillated by a lever 14 and through the gear 9 rotates the shaft 6. The bottle is held on a stand 41 attached to a rod 42 which is depressed against spring pressure by a cam on the gear 9. The amount of drop of the table is regulated bv an adjustable collar 46 which determines the position to which the tables rises. In use, the bottle is positioned on the stand and on manipulation of the handle 14 the tools 20 are closed upon the capsule and rotated, the table is lowered to form the spiral cuts and the table is then held stationary whilst the circumferential cut is made. The severed part of the capsule is removed by raising of the table.
