Abstract

310,965. Hill, J. May 5, 1928, [Convention date]. Vehicle headlight adjusting and focusing devices.-A device for facilitating the adjustment and focusing of automobile headlights comprises a frame A consisting of two L-shaped members 11, connected by cross-bars 12, 13, and mounted on trunnions 10 provided on brackets 4 adjustable by racks 5 and pinions 6 on the side members of a frame 1, cross-shaped plates 17, formed with radial slots 18 in which screws 19 are adjustably mounted, or other means adapted to engage within the lamp rims, being carried by blocks 16 slidably but non-rotatably mounted on a lever 14 rotatable in the members 11, and blocks 28 carrying metal plates 29 being slidably but non-rotatably mounted on the bar 12. In use, the device is placed in front of the automobile with the point 22<11> of an adjustable gauge bar 22 in contact with the right-hand lamp, the point 22<1> being at a distance from its clamping-screw 22<1> one half the distance between the lamps, the plates 17 are adjusted to bring the heads of the screws 19 into contact with the lenses, and just within the rims of the lamps and tilted to the desired degree by means of an arm 24 and a scale 26, and the lamps are then fixed in the adjusted position. To focus the lamps, the blocks 28 are brought into alignment with the plates 17, the frame A is swung over backwardly to bring the plates 29 into a vertical position, and the lamps bulbs and reflectors are adjusted by observing the images of the lamp filaments on the plates 29 preferably by the aid of a sighting device placed on the top of the lamp. The pivotal movement of the frame A is limited by stop plates 31, 32. In a modification, the plates 17, Fig. 10, are mounted on a fixed bar 42 of the frame A, which is adjusted by means of members 33, mounted on the pinions 10 and operated as by pinions 35 in mesh with toothed sectors 37, the frame being provided with projections 41, 41<1>, adapted to rest respectively on the surfaces 34, 34<1> of the members 33.
