Metal pipes.-Pipes are heat-insulated by coating them before assembly with a composition comprising rubber and a material containing or capable of forming, large numbers of small pores. The composition is preferably applied before vulcanization. Powdered or granulated cork, which may comprise more than 75 per cent of the volume of the composition, is a. suitable addition, and may be incorporated in a mixing mill. A typical composition is 47 per cent by weight of rubber, 35 per cent of cork, 3 per cent of sulphur, 14¢ per cent of barytes, and ¢ per cent of accelerator.
