309,299. Smith, C. C., and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. March 31, 1928. Manures.-A fertilizer consisting of ammonium nitrate and calcium carbonate, obtained as a byeproduct in the preparation of ammonium sulphate from ammonium carbonate and calcium sulphate with or without other ingredients, as described in Specification 305,760, is, according to the present invention, obtained by spraying or atomizing a hot concentrated solution of ammomium nitrate mixed with the calcium carbonate, preferably down a tower in contact with a stream of air. Granules of the mixed salt collect at the base of the tower and are dried and sifted to separate fines. The preferred method of spray ing is to disintegrate an annular stream of the slurry by means of jets of heated air.
