Abstract

309,149. Bartling, F., (Assignee of Lawaczeck, F.). April 5, 1929. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, April 6, 1929]. Gases and vapours, treating electrically.-In apparatus for separating dust &c. from gases, the gas is caused to follow a high velocity, for example twenty metres per second, in a relatively thin layer (a few inches thick) between smooth substantially parallel stationary or moving electrodes the collecting surfaces of which are kept clean owing to the velocity of the current. In order to prevent separated dust &c. from being retained with the purified gas owing to the velocity of flow, the purified gas is caused to change direction abruptly or catchment devices are provided to collect the layer of gas in contiguity to the collecting electrode an'd separate it from the bulk of the purified gas. Friction of the flowing gases may produce the necessary electric charge. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, gas to be purified is delivered by a pipe 3 into a space 9 between an electrically charged collecting electrode 2 and a rotating disc 1 in which are openings 4 through which purified gas passes to the outlet 5. The dust falls from the edge of the electrode into a hopper 6 when it is discharged by a rotatable valve 7. The disc 1 may be non-rotatable and may act as an emitting electrode. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 3 the gas passes between electrodes 27 and the purified part thereof issues through flared catchment nozzle 19 into pipes 20. The layers of gas in contiguity to the electrodes are received in slots 22 and pass into conduits 23 whence the gas may be returned to the apparatus for the treatment. The dust collected in the electrodes falls into hopper.
