Yarns and threads.-Yarn for weaving into fabrics for brake lining &c. comprises a thin metallic core 26, a loosely applied wrapping 16 of asbestos strip, and binding wires A, B laid in opposite directions. The asbestos strip 16 is fed positively by a roughened roller to a moistening device comprising a positively driven roller 21 immersed in a tank 23 of water which is maintained at constant level by an overflow pipe 24; from thence the strip is led between the two lower of three spaced horizontal bars 30 whereby it is held from rotation. The core wire 26 is led through the upper two bars 30 and the core and strip pass through the hollow spindles of the covering heads 38, 50 which bind the wires A, B about them in opposite directions. The strip is wrapped about the core by being held against rotation by the bars 30 and rotated at a distance therefrom by the first binding wire A. An electromagnetically operated stop motion, Fig. 8 (not shown), is provided and is actuated upon breakage of the core, strip or either of the binding wires, or when the roll of asbestos strip is exhausted.
