Abstract

308,949. White, A. E., (Budd Wheel Co.). Oct. 12, 1928. Discs for automobile wheels are rolled to the required taper form between dies which preform, the blank by an upsetting co-operation. The billet shaped as shown in Fig. 1 to facilitate engagement by the combined rolling and forging dies 10, 11 is first upset as shown in Fig, 2, a centering boss 17 being formed during this operation. The bulging of the metal causes the scale to break off and fall away. The dies are further advanced to flatten out the upset portion still more and during or after this further motion the dies are rotated the advance being continued until the final form 4 is obtained. The plunger 13 is advanced during the final stage and in conjunction with the pin 15 rolls out the majority of the metal from the boss 17, that which remains being removed by cutting. The forging-apparatus may be distinct from the rolling.
