Abstract

308,838. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges., (Assignees of Skutezky, R.). March 30, 1928, [Convention date]. Plastic compositions containing amorphous cellulose.-Viscose which may contain added vegetable fibres is formed into a sponge by incorporating as core forming material salts capable of reacting with alkali, such as ammonium or acid salts or mixtures of these with neutral salts, one or more of which may contain water of crystallization. Conditions may be adjusted so that the decomposition of the xanthate is produced by after treatment or by the salts conveniently with the coagulation. The Specification also describes the use of mixturs of hydrated and anhydrous neutral salts. The escape of water from the cellulose structure may be prevented independently of the nature of the pore forming fillers by heating in an atmosphere which may be under pressure or saturated with water vapour. In an example 160 grams of viscose (up to 10 per cent cellulose) containing if desired, colouring material, are mixed with 16 grams cotton, hemp, flax or like fibre, and 1.2 kilograms of a mixture of crystallized sodium sulphate and ammonium sulphate (or ammonium bisulphate or sodium sulphate), moulded and allowed to stand at 180‹ C. for half an hour to three hours. The salt remaining in the pores is dissolved out by hot water or a suitable solvent.
