Phonographic recorders and reproducers; magnetic instruments; diaphragms.-In acoustic apparatus such as sound recorders and reproducers and microphones, artificial resonance is added to certain parts of the apparatus by means of resonance inserts having a natural frequency within the range of frequencies to be amplifiea, whereby a greater amplitude of movement at such frequencies is obtained. The higher frequencies may thus be accentuated. The resonance inserts may be arranged between the armature and stylus arm of a recorder, or between a diaphragm and its supporting frame. In the recorder shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the armature b is connected to the stylus arm f by a reduced part g transmitting little or no power, the armature movements being transmitted to the stylus bar by thin finger-pieces h and cork or rubber resonance inserts i. The armature may be damped by strips of rubber &c. d, Fig. 3, having one or more inertia bodies k between them. In the diaphragm mounting shown in Figs. 5 and 6, a triangular diaphragm l is supported in a channel-shaped frame m, between cork or rubber pads n situated midway along each side, and the frame m may in turn be mounted on rubber pads or strips o. A circular diaphragm may be supported on cork pads at opposite ends of a diameter. Diaphragms may also be supported by finger-pieces, such as h, Fig. 1, and cork inserts.
