Abstract

Treating to facilitate drying. - A method of obtaining dry hygroscopic materials from solution consists in adding to the solution, after it has been evaporated to the greatest possible extent, a dry, preferably cold, substance, and mixing with a worm conveyer or other agitator. The mixture is then dried in ordinary drying apparatus the evaporator conveyer and drier being arranged in series. The addition preferably comprises the finished product resulting from the process. In crystallizing ammonium nitrate, the solution is evaporated until 10 to 20 per cent of water is retained, and 30 to 50 per cent of dry, cold ammonium nitrate is added to the hot solution. Additional substances mav be added with the finished product. For example, calcium nitrate and ground lime are added to calcium nitrate solution to obtain basic calcium nitrate. In drying molasses for cattle fodder, calcium phosphate or albuminous substances may be added with the finished product.
