Abstract

308,391. Pullin, C. G., and Groom, S. L. Jan. 9, 1928. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; packing, non-metallic.- Packing, applicable for preventing the entrance of oil into a magneto, comprises a member 12 carrying at its outer periphery a packing- ring 13 forming a joint with the engine casing 6, and at its inner periphery a packing- ring 14 making a joint with the magnet spindle 7, or with the hub 10 of a gear-wheel thereon. The packing 14, which is of cork or rubber &c., is forced into a conical bore 16 of the member 12 by the end pressure of the armature housing 11. Alternatively, the hub 10 may be coned and the bore 16 cylindrical. The member 12 may be held against the engine casing by the end pressure of the magnets, or by a separate plate secured by bolts. In order to permit adjustment of the height of the packing, the diameter of the member 12 may be less than that of the aperture in the casing, or the bore 16 may be eccentric to the outer periphery of the member. The member 12 may be formed with ventilating grooves 28.
