Letter-spacing mechanism.-In a differentialspacing mechanism for typewriters employed in preparing printing-surfaces, a friction-feed device connected to the carriage is operated by one or other of a number of universal bars which are operated differentially by the key-levers, selection of the operative universal bar being effected by means of a slide controlled by the shift mechanism. In the machine shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the carriage 3 is provided with a feed device comprising rocking arms 47, 48 supporting a pivoted shoe 52 which engages a disc 51 on a shaft 50, a cord 62 wrapped round a grooved drum 60 on the shaft being connected at both ends to the carriage. The arm 47 is connected by a cord 77 to a spring drum 78, and a pin 46 on the plate arm engages an arm 45 on a shaft 41. The key-levers 23 operate type-levers 10 and have shoes 38 engaging projections 39 of graded heights on universal bars 34, 35 carried by shafts 36, 37. The universal bars co-operate with a member 44 on a slide 40 mounted on a plate 40<a> secured to the shaft 41. The slide engages a lever 72 abutting on a rod 71 which engages a cam 70 on the shift frame 5 supporting the platen 7 and feed-rollers 8, movement of the shift frame causing the member 44 to move from one universal bar to the other. On depression of any of the key-levers, the shoe 52 is retracted idly by the arms 47, 48, and on release of the keylever, the arms are returned by the spring drum 78 and the shoe turns the disc 51 and effects letter-spacing. Carriage-releasing arrangements.-The drum, 60 forming part of the above-described mechanism is loose on the shaft 50 and is coupled thereto by means of a spring-urged disc 58 and a co-operating friction-disc 57, carriage-release being effected by rocking a lever 67 which abuts on a forked lever 65 engaging the disc 58.
