Abstract

Lateral-splash guards for vehicle wheels comprise two brushes 20, 28 carried one behind the other as shown by pivotal arms comprising rods 17, 26, which telescope in sleeves 16, 25 respectively under the control of springs therein, the telescopic arms passing through a slot in the bottom of a casing 1 mounted on the wheel hub or axle. The casing 1 may be attached to the wheel hub by means of a projecting boss mounted on a ball bearing 14. The casing 1 is normally held in a horizontal position by a stay 11 pivoted at 12 to the mud-guard 10 and slidably engaging an eye 13 on the casing, the lower end being connected by a spring 8 and a cord 6 to a point 7 on the casing, which is thus rocked on the hub to raise the front brush 28 from the ground when the vehicle body is displaced towards the wheel by irregularities of the road surface. The sleeve 16 is carried by a ring 15 rotatably mounted on the ball-bearing element, and the sleeve 25 is pivoted to a bar 23, the upper end of which is pivoted at 24 to the casing, a spring 31 maintaining the sleeve 25 and the bar 23 normally in alignment. The bar 23 is connected by a link 22 to an arm 21 on the sleeve 16, so that rocking movement will be imparted from one brush holder to the other on contact with obstructions. A spring 30 connected at one end to the casing and at the other end to an arm 30<1> on the ring 15 holds both brushes normally in their forward position, and rearward deflection is limited by a rubber buffer 38 adapted to engage the sleeve 16. The slot in the bottom of the casing 1 is protected by brushes to prevent the entry of mud. The outer eide of the casing is closed by a cover, which can be removed for cleaning or lubrication. The brush bristles are secured to flat plates 19, 27 which are provided with auxiliary splash-arresting plates 36 hinged on rods 35, so as to be raised by the action of water on gills 37 when the wheel passes through a puddle.
