307,113. Rushton, J. L., Lever, J., and Hill, H. Dec. 7, 1927. Hank type.-In a machine for treating skeins of artificial silk &c., wherein the carrier rods 50 nest between adjacent rollers 46 by which they are frictionally rotated, being periodically lifted by a notched traverse bar 53, carried forward, and then deposited between the next pair of friction rollers. The traverse bar 53 is operated by two separate co-ordinated driving- mechanisms imparting respectively the vertical and the longitudinal motions. The machine is driven from the single motor 11, the friction. rollers on both sides of the machine being rotated, right-handed and leithanded in groups, by corresponding worms 47 on shafts 31 through intermediate gearing. The vertical movement of the traverse bars 53 is obtained from cams 55 with flanges 56 between which the bars are guided, the cams being rotated by worms 61 on shafts 62 from a shaft 18 provided with a three-speed gear. The horizontal reciprocating movement of the traverse bars 53 is given by rocker-arms 82 and cams 87 also driven from the shaft 18. There may be overlapping of the operative period of the cams. The liquid may be sprayed on to the skeins. Between rollers 46 rotating in opposite directions, the rods 50 rests on ledges 91. Stationary notched bars 92 at each end of the machine assist operators in feeding the rods into, and in removing them from the machine.
