Metals, depositing; cells; electrodes; electrolytes, depositing.- Metals are deposited from solutions of their salts in a cell of the bi-polar filter-press type; the electrodes are of insoluble material adapted to receive a metallic deposit and are provided with apertures to permit circulation of the electrolyte. The apertures may be disposed at both top and bottom of the electrodes, or alternately at the top and bottom so as to produce a transverse flow through the cells; alternatively some of the cells may be arranged for flow of the electrolyte according to each system. In one construction the electrodes are assembled with intermediate diaphragms and spacing members, provided with apertures so disposed that the anolyte flows through the apparatus in one direction and the catholyte in the opposite direction. Additional apertures may be formed at the top of the electrodes for the escape of gas. The parts of the electrodes remote from the centre may be masked by varnishing or otherwise. The electrolyte may be circulated by means of a pump; alternatively the inlet and outlet pipes may be connected to an elevated storage tank and mans provided for introducing the gases generated in electrolysis into the outlet pipe to induce circulation.
