Abstract

306,547. Krause, G. A. Feb. 24, 1928, [Convention date]. Disinfectants; disinfecting.-Oligodynamically active metals, such as silver, copper, gold, iridium, thallium and antimony or active compounds, such as silver chloride, or alloys of the metals are deposited on carries with the application of heat for use in sterilizing substances or objects in the presence of liquids, by contacting them with said carriers. The carriers used include ceramic materials, highly porous clay, silica gel, activated carbon, kieselguhr, asbestos, quartz sand, glass wool and metals such as iron aluminium and copper. The carriers may be shapeless or shaped. Utensils or instruments such as surgical instruments may be provided with the carriers. The temperatures employed in the deposition may be up to the point of fusion of the oligodynamically active substance or of the carrier. Deposition may be obtained by treating the carrier with solutions containing compounds of the active substances and then calcining, e.g. in a reducing or oxidizing atmosphere, to give the metal, oxide or other active substance. Silver may be deposited by impregnating with silver nitrate solution and heating to about 450‹ C. Silver chloride mav be precipitated on the carrier and combined therewith by simultaneously or subsequently heating. Colloidal solutions or suspensions of the substances may also be employed or the substances may be applied to the carriers in powder form or by electrical atomization. may be deposited by the Schoop or other heat-operated spraying processes. The oligodynamic activity of the substances is said to be increased by the process. Specification 202,143, [Class 49, Food &c.], is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 293,385.
