Abstract
306,157. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Taylor, G. F.). Feb. 17, 1928, [Convention date]. Tools for reproducing.-A reproducing stylus is formed with a tip consisting mainly of an element of the tungsten-molybdenum group with an appreciable amount of carbon and preferably with an element of the iron group. The tip may be formed according to one method by mixing powdered tungsten, carbon and cobalt with an organic binder such as flour to which water and sodium hydroxide has been added and extruding to form a thin wire. The wire after drying is embedded in alumina powder in a graphite cylinder and fired at 1400‹ C. to effect sintering and furnish hard pieces which are ground to size finally with diamond dust. The tungsten and carbon may be replaced by tungsten carbide. In another method the powdered materials may be placed in a carbon mould and heated to sintering temperature whilst pressure is applied as described in Specifications 288,521 and 289,477, [both in Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.]. In this method one heating electrode may consist of a refractory element such as tungsten which is pressed into the powdered mixture and forms part of the resulting wire which is finally ground. The tip 8 may be silver soldered to a metal shank 9 as shown in Fig. 4.
