305,798. Gear Grinding Co., Ltd., Orcutt, A. H., and Starry, J. W. Jan. 24, 1928. Balancing. -- In a gear-grinding or other machine tool having a reciprocating slide b carrying a grinding wheel c or other tool and mounted on a vertical guide a, a weight d is connected to the slide so as to hold it with uniform pressure in all positions against its guide. A rope or chain i passes over a pulley f on the weight and over a pair of spaced pulleys e, the ends being each connected to one arm of a bell crank g pivoted on the slide. The other arms of the bell cranks are connected by fixed radius rods h to a stationary part. Thus the weight not only counter-balances the weight of the slide but also serves, through the constraint of the radius rods, to hold the slide against its guide. According to the Provisional Specification a single end of a rope may be connected to a single bell-crank on the guide or the rope may be directly connected. in an oblique position to the. slide. In a further modification two independent weights may be used, one for counterbalancing the slide and the other for holding it against the guide.
