Labelling and stamp-applying.-In a machine for wrapping bands, stamps or the like around cigarette or other packets an oscillating sucker 8 moves periodically into engagement with the lowermost of a pile 7 of revenue stamps or the like, which passes down a slot between guides 13, 14 over a gumming roller 15 from which it is stripped and carried by a suction wheel 19 to the broad side of a paket 1 which has been fed from a stack 2, by a conveyer 4. A gravity arm 2<a> is moved by the packet as it leaves the stack to close the valve of the oscillating sucker so that when the arm 2a is not raised by a packet the sucker is rendered inoperative. The bands are supported at the leading edge by a ledge 9 against which the band is bowed by the sucker and a support 10 moved between the bowed edge and the remaining bands in the pile. Continuously rotating rollers 20 grip the packet after the band has been aplied and feed it forward more quickly than the conveyer and deliver it to a platform 21 beneath a slacker 22. The platform is reciprocated vertically by a cam 24 and lever 20. Brushes 25 form the sides of the stacker and force the sides of the band on to the ends of the packet. A shoot 26 catches any bands which fail to be carried round the surface of the gum wheel. In Fig. 5 means are shown for placing a stamp on the narrow edge of the packet. The packets are taken singly from the bottom of a magazine 27 by means of pawl 29 conveyed on the rim of a wheel 28 and fall down into guides 30 of the labelling machine.
