Abstract

305,513. Madge, R. G. Oct. 6, 1927. Goggles.-Anti-dazzle devices of the kind comprising a support, resting on the nose of the wearer, and carrying one or more screens mounted to rock about a horizontal axis situated above the eyes of the user, have the support in the form of an open or skeleton frame having side wires, the screen being arranged to extend across both eyes of the wearer and detachably mounted on the skeleton frame. A considerable number of examples of the construction of the screen and the detachable connections are described, of which the following forms are typical. A skeleton frame 20, Fig. 1, has a straight central portion constituting an axis about the screen 31 may pivot on clips 32, 33. The screen 21 extends across both eyes of the wearer and is of translucent material. Two depending portions 35, 36 have sloping edges 37, 38 arranged so that one side of the field of vision is screened, movement of the eyes to one side sufficing to screen them from dazzle. Transparent screens, in addition, may be fitted to protect the eyes from draughts. Fig. 7 shows a modified support 63 for the frame 60 which is adapted to clip on to spectacles or eyeglasses. The ends 65 of the frame are bent over and housed in integral lugs 66 on the screen 61. In a modified form of screen, Fig. 14, there is provided a side screen 83 on each side and a lower depending portion 81 below each eye sloping towards the face of the wearer. The screen may be provided with apertures 105, Figs. 17 and 18, which apertures may be fitted with shutters 103 having various sized holes adapted to register with the holes 105. This form of screen is shown mounted on a modified support 111 comprising clips by which it is secured to a frame 109. A bar 112 on which the screen pivots is constructed with bent ends engaging the support 111 as shown. An additional shade mav be provided in front of the screen 100 and arranged to clip on to it. The screen 100 is also constructed in two portions each of which may be individually pivoted to the lens frames of spectacles. In place of apertures 105, notches 147, Fig. 35. may be made in the screen of U-form having V-shaped notched shutters 148 mounted in front of them. The latter constructions are stated to be specially applicable for viewing aeroplanes in motion.
