Abstract
305,366. Furnival, H., and Furnival, F. S. Feb. 6, 1928. Stopping and starting arrangements. - A machine for straightening metal sheets is combined with a printing or branding cylinder which is automatically put into operation by each sheet as it leaves the last pair of straightening-rolls so that irregularly fed sheets may be straightened and printed in the same operation and separate hand or continuously rotating printing-mechanism thus avoided. The straightening-rolls a are connected by gearing to a ratchet wheel C loosely mounted on the shaft b<1>, to which is secured the printing-cyclinder B and a disc carrying a spring- pressed pawl D, which engages the ratchet wheel so as to effect the rotation of the cylinder. The pawl is normally held out of contact with the ratchet wheel by a weighted trip lever E which is held in position by a lever F connected by a rod f to a lever G. When the forward edge of the sheet engages one of a number of fingers H<1>, H<2>, H<3> loosely mounted on a shaft H and connected by springs h to collars K<1>, K<2>, K<3> fixed thereon, the shaft is rotated and a tappet wheel K thereon engages the lever G to withdraw the lever F from the trip lever E so as to allow the pawl to engage the ratchet wheel and rotate the cylinder. When the rear edge of the sheet leaves the fingers the levers G, F return to normal position with the trip lever E held by the lever F in forward position. The pawl D is thus released after one revolution of the cylinder which is thus put out of action. The face of the lever E is somewhat eccentric to the path of the pawl so that the pawl is released gradually from the ratchet wheel. The finger immediately succeeding the finger engaged by the sheet is restrained by contact with the underside of the sheet from moving when the shaft H is rotated but is pulled by its spring into correct position when the sheet has passed thereover. Ink is applied to the printing-cylinder by rollers M driven from the straightening-rollers.
