Abstract

Tell-tale apparatus.-In a gyroscope compass having a follow-up element the linkage comprises a frictionless non-contacting or mere influence linkage between two members of an oscillatory circuit preferably in the form of a variable electrostatic connection between the two elements. Fig. 3 shows the sensitive element 10 carrying a one condenser plate E while the followup element 11 carries the co-operating condenser plates E<1>. A double relay 12, 12<1> controls the azimuth motor T through gearing 15 which in addition operates a transmitter 16. The condenser members E, E<1> may form a reactive coupling for a thermionic valve as shown in Fig. 1<A> and be adapted to cause the valve to oscillate when they are displaced to actuate a relay Q controlling the field current of the motor T. In a modification (Fig. 1 not shown) the members E, E<1> are in parallel with the tuning condenser V. Alternatively two sets of members E<1> co-operating with two valves may be employed differentially arranged each valve operating a relay controlling one of the field coils F', F<2> so that the arrangement does not hunt.
