Variable-speed epicyclic gearing. - Braking means for change speed gears of the epicyclic type particularly for motor vehicles comprises a drum having a peripheral lubricant-receiving groove and a brake band closely fitting the groove so as to imprison a film of lubricant within the groove in one direction of rotation of the drum to reduce the coefficient of friction and thus to avoid overheating, the brake band being formed with a gap which is so shapel and arranged that when the drum is rotated in the direction in which the brake is to be operated, one boundary of the gap acts as a scraper to expel lubricant from the groove and so increase the coefficient of friction. The invention is particularly applicable to change speed gears comprising planetary gears adapted to be set in operation by gear members caused to rotate by the application of bands cooperating with double armed levers or toggles which have limited freedom to slide relatively to their fulcra. The band 1 having a lining 2 fitting between peripheral tapering flanges on the drum is connected by links 3, 4 with a toggle 5 notched at 6 for sliding engagement with a fulcrum bar 7. The movements of the toggle 5 are limited by a stop 8 and a cam 9. When the drum rotates in an anticlockwise direction a very small portion of the band engages the drum at 13, 14 and imprisons the lubricant. When the drum rotates in a clockwise direction whereby effective frictional engagement is gradually established until engagement is complete, one boundary edge 12 of the gap 11<a> expels lubricant from the grooved brake drum. Admission of lubricant to the braking surfaces may be by centrifugal force and is prevented by the application of the brake band to the drum.
