Spindle apparatus; spindle-driving apparatus. -In apparatus for spinning or twisting flax, jute, or other fibrous material, of the type comprising a tube, cup or flyer A, Figs. 1 and 3, revolving with a spindle F and having eyelets or guides B through which the yarn passes to a holder supported and driven by a carrier plate on the spindle, a drag-ring H is provided connected with the bobbin or carrier plate so that it is capable of exerting a differential drag thereon, that is the slower the rotation of the ring H in relation to that of the spindle the faster the speed of the bobbin carrier, and vice versa. Balls G, rollers or other rotary bodies are interposed between the drag ring H and the carrier d, d<1>, Fig. 1. and are accommodated in slots or apertures a in the wall of the member A. An intermediate member or members may be introduced so that the bobbin or pirn may be driven more slowly than the cup or flyer A. The carrier members d, d<1> are pressed together by springs d<2> and motion is transmitted from the carrier to the bobbin by positive driving devices or centrifugal members J. In the alternative arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the carrier members e, e<1> are pressed together by springs d<2> while the balls G are mounted in a cage g connected at g<1> to the member A.
