Abstract

303,581. Danby, J. F. W., and Buckley, C. Oct. 13, 1927. Exhaust silencers. - Exhaust gases pass through a pipe 1 into an open ended cylinder 3, bars 4 across which support an axle 5 on which are mounted threebladed propellers 6 rotated by the flow of the exhaust. The axle 5 is extended at 9 to carry an impeller 12 the blades 11 of which are inclined to produce a suction effect on the gases. The blades rotate in an annular space 13 between the cylinder 3 and a surrounding cylinder 14 which is slotted at 16 to permit the gases to enter another annular space 17 formed by a cylinder 18 having outlet slots 22. The slots 16, 22 are arranged at opposite ends of the cylinders in order to produce a sinuous flow of the exhaust. The slots 22 deliver into an annular passage 35 between the cylinder 18 and an outer casing 27 which has an extension 29 filled with wire netting or turnings and terminating in an outlet portion 36, slotted at 31, bevelled at 32 and containing a flap valve 33. The end of the cylinder 14 is closed by a dished end-plate 19 shaped so as to facilitate the passage of the exhaust gases from the cylinder 3 to the annular space 13. The areas of the passages through which the exhaust passes, increase from the cylinder 3 to the annular space 35. This space may contain a single or multiple helical baffle 36 to whirl air admitted through ports 34 where the silencer is used on aircraft. The cylinder 18 may be dispensed with. The cylinders and casings have their flanged ends secured by bolts 28. In a modified construction, the cylinder 14 is situated at the end of the cylinder 3 and contains an impeller driven through toothed gearing from, but in the reverse direction to. the propeller in the cylinder 3 and at a lower speed. The cylinders and casings are attached to shoulders on an end plate, the bearings for the rotating parts are provided with lubricating means, and the outlet terminates in a slotted fishtail portion. The construction of the silencers facilitates assembling and dismantling.
