Single coatings; compound fabrics. - In the manufacture of linoleum, finely disintegrated dry oil-resistant paper or fibrous pulp such as wood pulp is used in place of cork, together with a mineral lubricant such as china clay or plaster of paris. The paper is rendered oil-resistant by being soaked in varnish or in a drying oil such as oxidized linseed or kapok oil and dried prior to final disintegration. The paper or pulp may be soaked in the varnish or oil prior to disintegration, paper for instance being dipped as sheets and hung up to dry, or the paper or pulp may be drenched with oil or varnish after disintegration, and the resulting cake of material finely disintegrated after drying. Disintegration may be effected in a high speed impact beater for acting on dry materials. The proportions may be 60 to 50 per cent of paper or pulp and 40 to 50 per cent of mineral lubricant. The linoleum mixture and the process of manufacture are as usual, the mixture consisting for instance of cork, paper or fibrous pulp, mineral lubricant and a drying oil, with colouring matter, but the proportion of cork is reduced from 10 to one per cent.
