Abstract

Screw propellers. - Propeller blades of moulded material have thick profiles at the roots for attachment to the boss which gradually thin toward the blade proper. The blades are finished by a rolling process, the outer parts being then twisted to the proper pitch. The propellers, or blades, may be cut from a block. The unfinished blocks are supported on a table between adjustable rolls, the table being driven by rack and pinion off the main drive for the rolls. For small two-bladed propellers, a block is cast with a thin central region and is cut across to provide a number of similar sections ready for rolling. For large two-bladed propellers, separate blocks are cast having the shape, Fig. 3, and the sections, Figs. 5 and 6. For the rolling operation upper and lower rolls 11, 12. are shaped to produce the requisite sections on the blades which are carried by a table 13, Figs. 9 and 10, having a lot 16 to provide a space for the roll surface 17 of the lower roll 12. The rolls are driven by gear shafts and pinions on the lower roll shaft engage racks in the table 13. The supporting rollers 14 of the table may be free or geared to the table drive. The rolls are adjusted by gears 24, 25.
