Abstract

302,395. Lucas, Ltd., J., Lucas, O., Turner, E. O., and Mason, S. A. Sept. 16, 1927. Motors with unwound iron armatures. -In an electricallyoperated reciprocating windscreen wiper, a base-plate carries on one face a motor comprising a stationary electromagnet with a pair of holes arranged entirely on one side of the axis of rotation of a rotary multi-pole iron rotor and on the other face the speed-reducing and wiper-oscillating gear. Fig. 4 shows in sectional plan (without the wiper itself) a form which is shown in Figs. 1 and 5 in elevation from the motor and wiperactuating ends respectively. The magnet is arranged with its poles a, a on one side of the shaft e of the armature b consisting of a laminated iron structure with four polar projections c. A cam d operating on the lower spring member i intermittently energizes the magnet through contacts g, f. The motor is mounted on one face of the base-plate n, on the other face of which is the reducing gear train q, r, s, t starting from a pinion on the armature shaft e and terminating in a. crank mechanism u, v whereby the wiper shaft o is oscillated. The motor mav be started or stopped by means of a sliding finger knob l acting on a projection m on the normally stationary spring arm k which carries the upper contact g, or this knob may be used only for stopping the motor, in which case a knob w on the wiper spindle o is employed for starting the action. A stronger action may be obtained, for instance for operating a double wiper by duplicating the magnet system, the two parts being mounted on opposite sides of the armature spindle. By pressing in the knob w against the action of a spring, and so disengaging a pin x in the wiper shaft o from the driving sleeve y the wiper may be hand-operated independently of the motor.
