Corner joints; joints between box bottoms and bodies; lids; battens, strengthening; ventilating boxes.-In a box, crate, &c. of the kind having the bottom and some or all of the sides and ends made of a number of longitudinal and transverse interwoven or interlaced strips of thin wood or veneer secured to the inner faces of battens, the bottom comprises two longitudinal battens q, the ends or sides each comprise two longitudinal battens a, b and two vertical battens c and the sides or ends each comprise two longitudinal battens i, k. The interwoven wood or veneer strips are stapled to the battens and the various members of the box are secured together by staples and nails. The formation of the bottom allows air to circulate underneath it and between the boxes when they are stacked one upon the other. A pair of the sides or ends may be made of solid boards, the bottom may be reinforced by transverse battens of less depth than the battens q, and the sides or ends may be reinforced by vertical battens which are thinner than the battens i, k so as not to interfere with the cir. culation of air between the boxes when stacked side by side. Corner pieces s may be nailed to the upper and lower battens and a lid, formed of interwoven strips or veneer secured to longitudinal battens or of longitudinal and transverse battens secured together, may be nailed to the upper battens of the box or a central batten of the lid may project at the ends thereof to engage wire loops on the ends of the box.
