Signs; supporting. - An advertising device adapted to be illuminated by day-light reflected to the sign-bearing wall, is characterized by the use of reflecting surfaces adjacent to the lightadmitting opening to reflect downwardly into the casing any reflected rays proceeding upwardly, thus preventing the escape of any light which has once entered the casing and finally passing it all out through the stencils at varying angles by repeated reflection. Fig. 7 shows a double-sided sign with two convex surfaces acting as the downward reflectors. The whole of the inner surfaces of the casing are of reflecting material except for the actual letters of the sign-bearing plates. Light entering through the open top is reflected repeatedly until it all eventually passes out through the letters. Fig. 6 shows a multi-sided conical hanging cage, suspended by a ring 1 and chains 2,. and having adertvisements on all faces and a curved downward reflector above the ring 1. Each stencil receives light by reflection from all' the other faces of the cage. The apparatus shown in Fig. 7 may be moulded or blown in one piece as a glass tube, with a transparent light-admitting top, or may be made of separate panels. Opaque end frames 6 carrying flanges 5 and hooks 3 are used to assemble and suspend the appliance. The reflecting walls may also be concave, convex, undulating in one or more directions, or may be formed of a succession of narrow strips. Both the sign-bearing and reflecting walls may be of corrugated, ribbed, ornamental, or reinforced glass, and the letters &c. may be formed of ground or frosted glass or by sand-blasting or they may be. carried bv a movable screen which can be unwound from rollers at the end of the apparatus. The sign-bearing plate may be thinner or thicker in the letter-occupying area than the remainder of the plate. Stencils on opposed surfaces may be in staggered relation to increase the reflection from one plate through the other. The box may be made of celluloid, cellulose, gelatine or mica.
