Abstract
301,142. Kennedye, C. B. Sept. 14, 1927. Borehole apparatus.-A rotary welldrilling tool comprises a body 1 with ribs 3 for engagement by a fishing tool, and a depending part 4 with outwardly projecting portions 5, the parts between the portions 5 being narrower than the body 1; longitudinal slots 7 in the parts 5 receive laterally-projecting reaming cutters 9, and transverse slots 8, communicating with the slots 7, receive drilling bits 14 which overlap at the centre of the drill to prevent clogging. The reaming cutters have lateral losing lugs 12 engaging grooves ; further they may project downwardly to form secondary drill bits. The drilling bits 14 may have blades 16 thinner than the body 15 and provided with reinforcing ribs 22, and have lugs 17 engaging grooves. Screw locking pins 25 may, also be provided. A water &c. channel 17<1> divides into ducts 18<1>, which lead water &c. to a point immediately in front of the outer edge of the drill bits; channels 20 facilitate removal of cuttings, and the passages 18<1> are blocked by the formation when the bits 14 are worn away. The water &c. is delivered at such pressure as to assist the drilling operation.
