Abstract

301,034. Electroacustic Ges. Nov. 23, 1927, [Convention date]. Subaqueous audible signals.-In a high-fre. quency sound emitter, particuhrly one using a supersonic or high acoustic frequency, an elon. gated radiating surface 4 is arranged with its longer axis vertical so as to give substantially uniform distribution of sound over a horizontal plane, and is dimensioned so as to have a length equal to a multiple of the wave-length of the operating frequency and a width not greater than half this wave-length. The apparatus may have duplicate radiating surfaces 4 carried in a body 1 of stream-line section which is mounted in a ship's skin 3 in such a way that it can be moved out and in. The surfaces 4 may be excited electromagnetically by a series of elements of the kind shown in Fig. 3, or, alternatively, a single elongated electromagnetic unit may be used. Piezo-electric excitation may also be used, the operating potentials being supplied from a thermionic generator. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also radiators of a length equal to the wave length, and states that the apparatus may be used as a receiver. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
