Abstract
300,646. Favre, P. A., (Assignees of Blum, P.). Nov. 17, 1927, [Convention date]. Drawing ; forming glass tubes.-In a method of making tubing, a glass cylinder with an axial bore is heated until it is plastic, and is then drawn in the direction of its length to form tubing of the required diameter. The cylinder a, Fig. 1, is threaded on to a metal former b consisting of a tube which terminates in a bulbous enlargement b<1>. The lower end of the cylinder is heated by suitable means, such as burners c, until the glass melts and flows by its own weight around the bulb b<1>, as shown in Fig. 4. A tubular bait d is stuck on to the glass and is drawn downwards by suitable apparatus, such as opposed endless belts e, and the drawing is continued at such a speed that the glass drawn away from the bulb b<1> forms tubing of the required diameter. As the hot glass is drawn away, the cylinder a slips downwards and is progressively melted. As the tubing leaves the drawing-belts, it is notched at intervals by any suitable means, and an oscillating member breaks off the lowermost length and deflects it into a shoot. Means are provided for bringing a new cylinder into place above the burner when one is exhausted.
