Abstract
299,522. Leonard, V. July 29, 1927. Antiseptics; lotions; medicines for internal use. -An effective bactericidal solution of normal hexyl resorcinol, for sterilizing living tissue surfaces or objects such as surgical and dental instruments or false teeth, is prepared by dissolving the hexyl resorcinol in glycerol and adding water to obtain a clear solution having a very low surface tension. There is an optimum composition of glycerol and water at which the surface tension reaches a minimum value and the germicidal power reaches a maximum. Further addition of water does not precipitate the hexyl resorcinol and only raises the surface tension relatively slightly. As an example, one part of hexyl resorcinol is dissolved in 300 parts by weight of glycerol .and 700 parts of water are added. The clear solution obtained has a surface tension of 3'7 dynes per centimetre. Reference is made in the Specification to the known use of a solution of hexyl resorcinol in olive oil for internal administration. Specifications 9726/94 and 15931/08 are referred to. The Provisional Specification describes the application of the process to such of the higher phenols (such as hexyl resorcinol and its homologues) as are soluble in glycerol, or to mixtures of these higher phenols.
