Abstract

Limping ; fermenting.-Tea leaf is conditioned or fermented by moving it in superimposel layers with intervening spaces through a body of air of a predetermined temperature and humidity moving continually across the surface of the leaf in a direction transverse to its movement so that all the leaf is treated with air of the desired condition. In the method described, the leaf is disposed loosely on trays 6 carried with air spaces between, on trucks 4 moved by gravity or otherwise through the treatment chamber 1. One wall of the chamber 1 has a series of entry flues 7, to which the air is fed from a fan 9 under pressure, and with a series of air extraction ducts 8. Air is supplied to fan 9 through a humidifier 16 having a water spray, water circulation being obtained by a pump 17. Air is fed to the humidifier from a conduit 13 connected to the outside atmosphere, or from a conduit 14 connected to inside the factory and having a steam or other heater 20 which may be under control of a thermostat in the humidifier outlet, or from a conduit 15 connected to the extraction ducts 8. Dampers. are provided in the conduits 13, 14, 15 so that the constitution of the air supply can be regulated. The chamber 1 has an entry 2 and exit 3 provided with doors, and has also inspection doors or windows. The air is maintained at 80-85‹ F. during the treatment.
