Abstract
297,319. Wells, S. D. Sept. 17, 1927. [Convention date]. Pulp, preparation of; pulping engines.-In the production of pulp suitable for the manufacture of paper according to Specification 285,277, a stronger pulp is obtained, and an increased yield, if the ratio of dry pulp to water in the material treated in the rod mill is increased to 7.5-9.5 per cent. The rod mill consists of a cylindrical shell 1 mounted at each end in a bearing 2 and having a feed pipe 5 at one end and a discharge orifice at the other. The drum is rotated by a driven gear 4<a> engaging a large annular gear 4 secured to the flange at one end of the drum. The metal shell is lined with suitable material such as wood planks 10 and with a wear surface preferably of metal elements 11 which may be of the " wave " type. End wear elements 12 are coned outwardly as shown in Fig. 4 which shows also an outlet 13 longer than the inlet and a plate 15 supported from the outside acting to retain the rods within the mill and to ensure positive treatment by rod action of all material entering the mill. In this construction a ring 14 encircling the drum and supported on rollers would replace the outlet end bearing 2.
