Abstract

296,213. Atkinson, H. Oct. 10, 1927. Drawings to Specification. Wells.-Oil-sands, from which all the oil recoverable by usual methods has been extracted, are treated with a strong alkaline solution, preferably of soap, soda ash, caustic soda, or caustic potash, to displace, the residual oil and enable it to be recovered. Dry sands may be first flooded with water. The alkaline solution is preferably applied through one well, or set of wells, under a desired hydrostatic head, and the displaced oil pumped from another well or set of wells. Where the oil sands hold water containing, or artificially supplied with, soda ash, caustic soda may be added. Where the oil sands are saturated with water, a soluble salt may be added.
