Abstract

Arrangement; electrodes.-A cell of Bunsen type comprises an outer vessel a containing acid in which the negative electrode f of zinc or zinclead alloy is immersed, the electrode having a perforated sleeve h of material not attached by the acid, such as cement, casein, or glass. A cylinder c of impervious material such as glass, porcelain, casein, suitably treated paper, &c. has a porous closure d at its lower end, of carbon, earthenware, &c. The cylinder contains highly concentrated depolarizing acid and a carbon electrode e which may be integral with the closure d or screwed thereto. The cylinder is supported by an enlargement or external rib adapted to rest on the cover b and is held by clips m. Alternatnvely the vessel a may be bottle-shaped, so as to support the cylinder directly, without provision of a cover. The vessel a may be of cement with or without iron reinforcement, and internally coated. with tar, asphalt, &c. or may be of glazed earthenware, alass,<$>c. The sleeve h may be omitted, and in a modification the negative electrode is in the form of a zinc &c. vessel lining a. In a further modification, vessel a is of thick zinc or zinc-lead alloy and itself forms the negative electrode.
