Abstract

296,169. Brown, W. J., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. July 12, 1927. Vacuum tubes.-A generator of very short waves is enclosed within or embraced by, an electrical cage or screen by which the high-frequency energy is radiated. The generator may be of the kind described in Specifications 268,028, [Class 40 (v), Wireless signalling &c.], 268,029, or 297,174. As shown in Fig. 2, it comprises a pair of valves 10. 11, with their corresponding electrodes connected by parallel conductors and with their supply circuits connected at the central potential anode. The anode connection, may be kinked as shown at 12. The radiator comprises two metal cylinders 13, 14 spaced apart at their open inner ends and either open or closed at their outer ends. The inner ends may be directly connected by one or more wires, or may, as shown,. be connected to the anode lead on opposite sides of the kink 12. An ammeter 16 may be included. Fig. 3 shows a constructional form of the apparatus. The two sets of electrodes are included in a common envelope 20. The two cylinders 13, 14 are held apart by two insulating discs 21, 22 clamped together by bolts 23, which may, or may not, form the necessary conductive connection between the two cylinders. The supply leads extend through radial slots 28, and bye-pass condensers between the leads may be housed in necesses between the two discs. Insulating and protective gaskets are interposed between the envelope 20, the cylinders 13, 14 and the discs 21, 22. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown),. each cylinder is telescopic, the sections nearer the centre being movable to and from each other by rack-and-pinion mechanism. The degree of coupling between the oscillation generator and the radiator depends on the distance between the inner ends of the cylinders. The cylinders may be of elliptical or stream-line cross-section, and the whole apparatus may, as shown in Fig. 6, be suspended from a mast or other support by halyards attached to rings 50, 51. connected by ropes 46 - - 49 to insulating arms 42 . - 45 projecting radially from the discs 21, 22. Specification 274,183 also is referred to.
