Abstract

295,641. Suida, H. Aug. 15, 1927. [Convention date]. Acetic acid.-The extraction of acetic acid from its aqueous solutions is effected in the liquid phase bv means of esters of monovalent or polyvalent alcohols with monobasic or polybasic cyclic acids, which esters have boiling points above 150‹ C., and the extracted acid is separated from the solvent by distillation. The process may be effected at a raised temperature so that some part of the extraction is effected in the vapour phase. In an example a 12 per cent acetic acid solution is caused to rise in an extraction column containing filling material, and dibutyl phthalate is caused to descend from the top. In another example preheated 25 per cent acetic acid is supplied at the top of a column upon which is mounted a rectifying column. Diethyl phthalate is supplied at the top of the rectifying column, and the bottom of the lower column is heated so as partly to vaporize the acetic acid. Other solvents mentioned are dimethyl dihexyl phthalates, esters of the naphthene acids, and high-boiling esters of henzaic acid. Specifications 218,271, 218,272, and 296,172 are referred to.
