Abstract
295,493. Schade, F. July 15, 1927. Winding webs; collapsable. spindles. -A method of producing tightly wound rolls of paper, particularly of fragile, corrugated, or longitudinally folded paper, consists in exerting an axial pressure,. on the ends of the loosely wound roll by means of plates rods, &c., disposed at right angles to the axis of the roll, and tightening up the roll from the inside of the coil. The loosely wound roll is obtained by winding the paper in an apparatus such as described in Specification 132,197 and comprising a spindle 11, Fig. 1, to which the end of the web from the supply roll 1 is secured, and a pair of discs 12 secured to the spindle 11 by hubs 15 and carrying removable rods 13 on which the web is wound. When winding two side by side rolls a dividing plane 14 is mounted on the spindle 11. To tighten the roll, the rods 13 are withdrawn and the hubs 15 made loose upon the spindle by slackening the set screws 16. The spindle is then transferred to bearings 10. Fig. 3, and a pair of bars 23, Figs. 3 and 4, pivoted on a shaft 22, are turned to engage the hubs 15 to prevent rotation of the discs 12. By means of screws 26, 27, the bars are moved towards each other to cause the discs to exert pressure on the ends of the roll, and the spindle 11 is then coupled to a driving shaft 20 to wind up the roll from within.
