Abstract
294,146. Junkers, H. July 18, 1927, [Convention date]. Propelling.-The shaft if a high-speed aircraft &c. propeller is mounted so as to be free to swing about a point at the end 6 remote from the propeller, and in the neighbourhood of the propeller is supported by a spring bearing 15 which permits such swinging. The shaft is able, therefore, to align itself so that the centre of inertia lies in the axis of rotation, and oscillations due to un balance are avoided. The arrangement is illustrated for a geared shaft, but is applicable also to a shaft direct-driven through a universal joint. The bearing 15 may be mounted in its housing by leaf-springs 16, which are advantageous for their damping effect, or by helical springs, rubber blocks, &c. In the form shown in Fig. 3 the bearing 15 is coupled to its housing 25 by bundles 22 of steel wires.
