Reaping and mowing machines.-A triangular frame 4, 5, 6, hinged to a wheeled frame along the line of the member 6 is secured at its apex to a saddle 8 in which is mounted a spindle 9 extending at its ends into brackets on a slipper 10 that rides on the ground. A finger bar 14, slotted longitudinally and having the edge of the slot turned up for strength, extends outwards from the slipper 10 to another slipper 19 and carries the usual fingers 15. A chain of knives comprising triangular blades 20 linked together by double metal links 21 moves along the bar 14 riding on a liner 17 arranged on distance pieces 16 in the fingers. The chain is pressed down by members 39 that may be adjusted by removing shims 40. The chain passes round sprocket wheels 13. 18, arranged at the inner and the outer ends of the bar respectively, the sprocket 18 being adjustable along the bar to tension the chain. The sprockets are slotted to take the blades 20. A casing 23, 24 covers the rear run of the chain. The wheel 13 is driven through bevel gear from a pulley on the spindle driven through a belt 38 from a shaft 7 passing through the sleeve member 6. The shaft 7 is actuated through bevel gear and a clutch from one of the main wheels 1. A slipping connection may be fitted to prevent damage should one of the knives engage an obstruction. The members 4, 5, may be adjustable in sockets on the member 6. The fingers 15 may be spaced unevenly to spread the cutting resistance.
