Fats and fatty oils, extracting. - Fat is extracted from animal tissues and made edible by mechanically breaking down the tissue in a heated thin layer, and filtering. For example, finely divided fat scrap is heated to about 120‹ F. in a hopper 1, and gradually forced in a thin sheet between a throat 3 and a revolving threaded or ridged macerator- 28. The melted fat passes through a filter 34 to an outlet 35; the residue is periodically removed from the compartment 4 by removing the cover 11 and first lifting out the macerator and filter- To enable the macerator to oscillate and so prevent jamming, the shaft 27 is pivoted on a pin 25. Separate electrical heaters 6, 7, 8 are preferably employed for the hopper, throat and filter chamber. The filter shown consists of 6 upper and 6 lower layers of absorbent cellucotton fabric divided by a sheet 48 of corrugated metal gauze and sewn into a long envelope which is folded as shown with one end 50 near thecentre. The folds are kept apart by wooden or other spacing members 49, and are bound together by gauze or other bands. Tapes 53, 54 are also provided to bridge corrugations on the outside of the bends in the sheet 48. The complete filter is held in a metal holder 36, preferably slightly compressed between collars 40, 45 whereby it is ' raised above the floor of the chamber 4 and any water &c. which may settle out.
