Abstract

292,695. Charles, A. D., and Murray, R. T. March 26, 1927. Blanks, transferring. - An endless chain conveyer a or transporting small articles such as fish hooks, needles, pins, &c. under various tools during manufacture, is provided with a series of jaw members f, g which are closed automat fically on the articles at position 1 by a cam surface or track m arranged parallel to and below the chain anc. adapted to be moved relatively to it. The driving driving drum c is driven by pawl and ratchet mechanism actuated by a cam d and moves the chain step-by-step through distances equal to the length of a link so that the articles are momentarily held stationary under the successive tools. The track m is provided at one end with a roller p which is engaged by a cam q so timed that the track is moved to the left as each open jaw approaches the position 1 and is maintained in that position sufficiently long for the depending part h of the pivoted jaw g to move one step along the track so that the jaw is riaintained closed when the track is returned to its initial position by a spring &c. Each part h carries a resilient arm having a wiping block which bears on the track. The resilient arms allow for slight variations in the thickness of the articles held in the jaws. Variations in thickness can also be allowed for bv altering the distance between the track and chain. Pairs of similar jaws may be mounted on each side of the chain so that articles may be fed simultaneously through two sets of tools.
