Abstract

292,682. Vickers, Ltd., Pearson, E. C., and Ritchie, J. March 23, 1927. Loading- appliances. - Relates to loading apparatus in which is employed a power-operated rammer having a tubular container to receive the powder charges, the front of the container serving to ram the projectile. According to the invention, the casing of the rammer is bodily movable from a receiving position at one side of the gun to a ramming position behind the gun. The invention also includes a projectile tray the movements of which are automatically synchronized with those of the rammer casing. The invention is shown in plan in Fig. 3 applied to the alternate loading of two guns, the rammer C and projectile tray D of one gun X being in position to receive the charges and projectile which are transferred from a hoist-cage E by rams F, whilst the rammer and projectile tray of the other gun Y are in ramming position behind this gun. The tubular rammer C<1> containing the powder charges a, b, Fig. 2, is operated through rack and pinion gear of known type at twice the speed of the hydraulic ramming cylinder C<2> and is provided in known manner with a movable plate to retain the charges in the gun whilst the rammer is withdrawn. The projectile tray D is moved parallel to itself about an inclined pivot D<2> through epicyclic chain gear D<1> from the lower receiving position to the higher ramming position in line with the charges. The traversing movement of the rammer casing is effected through a hydraulic ram G and movable ram cylinder G<1>, which through a recess G<3x> and projection G<2> operates links G<3>, G<5>, and rack G<6>, to effect the synchronous movements of the projectile tray. The pressure and exhaust pipes serving the traversing cylinder G<1> are arranged to serve also the ramming cylinder C<2>, the cylinders being controlled by separate hand-operated slide, valves.
