Abstract

292,489. Vion, E. June 18, 1927, [Convention date]. Mariners' and aeronautical compasses.-In a compass particularly intended for aircraft the card is provided with graduations around its rim and on its lower face and the bowl has a transparent periphery and a transparent base so that the card can be read either from the side or from below. The Figures show a liquid compass having a card of L- section which is graduated on its surfaces A, A<1>, and is carried by a float B with a. pivot b bearing in a support C. The bowl comprises a transparent base D and a transparent cylindrical part E mounted between rings f, f<4> which are connected by strips f<3>. The base D is mounted in the ring f by means of a ring f<1> and washer f<2>. Mounted on the ring f<4> is a cover G having a flexible upper surface g' to allow for expansion of the liquid, and a domed lower surface g<1> with apertures g<2> for the escape of air bubbles. The ring f carries lubber lines H, H' for use with the scales on the surfaces A, A' respectively, and is adjustably mounted in a ring I provided with a scale to allow the bowl to be. set at a desired azimuth relatively to the ring. The ring I is secured to the aircraft &c. by an arm J and support K and may carry an illuminating device comprising a lamp L mounted in a tube L'. A reflecting prism &c. M pivoted at J<1> on the arm J facilitates observation of the card from below. The arm J is connected by rubber buffers &c. N to the support K having holes by which it can be secured within the wing &c. of the aircraft. The support K also carries the case P in which the compensators are mounted, this case being mounted on a plate 0 pivoted at K<1> to the support K and capable of being clamped by a screw K<2>. To secure the case P in its operative position a pin O<1> carried by a ring O<3> operated by a plunger O<5> is adapted to pass through a hole O<2> in the plate O into an aperture K<4> in the support K. The compass may be mounted within one of the wings of the aircraft, an aperture being provided in the lower surface of the wing through which the compass projects downwards, and a pivoted shutter being provided in the upper surface to permit access to the compensators &c.
